Trademark tips.

I have some incredible trademark tips for you which I have gathered over more than 20 years in which I have gotten more than a thousand trademarks on the trademarks register. I have seen too many people try to do their own trademark applications and get it horribly wrong.

One person I know filed in a whole lot of trademark classes that they didn’t need to and they wasted over $3,000. Another client that I had actually phoned the intellectual property office for advice on which goods he needed to cover. The advice was incorrect and his coverage of his goods was so narrow that he might as well not have had a trademark at all. Most recently I’ve had a client who went against my advice about not including a place name in her trademark, I also advised her not to include a logo because I wanted her trademark application to be as strong as possible. But what she went and watered down the value of her trademark by incorporating the logo, the place name, a whole lot of other descriptive things whereas it would’ve been stronger with just the words.

I’ve also seen people waste their money on trademarks, by doing searches that they thought meant that they could use a trademark or use a brand name and then it turned out not to be the case. I have seen a lot of drama, a lot of stress and a lot of unnecessary expense. So my top trademark tips are for business owners who want to get trademarks right, first time, every time. All the best with your business and your trademarks and if you have any questions, contact me anytime. My name is Cathryn Warburton and I am the Legal Lioness.
