Lawyer in Your Corner. Today, I am reviewing Lawyer in Your Corner.
This is a book that I have co-written with my husband and business partner, Mark Warburton.
That’s us on the back there. That is not me on the cover. When I created this book cover, well, the cover is to represent how I feel about my clients, being the warrior who looks after you, who’s got your back,
and hence the title as well, Lawyer in Your Corner. And when I created the cover, I received a lot of negative feedback from author’s groups who said I should make it a plain blue cover with the scales of justice. And that it was too sexy and I shouldn’t have it on a legal book. I’m a little bit of a rebel and my client base really likes it. But, what is Lawyer in Your Corner all about? It’s a very practical guide
for small business owners about a few legal topics that Mark and I see people coming into our office regularly and getting wrong. And so, we talk a bit about intellectual property, not much, although intellectual property is our main thing. We have another book on intellectual property. This is just a very basic intro. It’s filled with checklists. So, for example, there’s a section on social media. Friend or foe is what we call it. And it’s about keeping out of legal hot water on social media. And you can go through the checklist and see if you’re putting your business at risk. There’s a bit about disputes. What to do when you have a dispute with a business partner. What to do when you receive a letter of demand. How should you structure your business? Should it be a company or should it be in your personal name? Those things that sometimes as business owners we don’t think about right at the very beginning, or maybe you do. So, it really is a help for small business owners and it’s not the kind of
thing that you have to read from cover to cover, you’ll be pleased to know. But, throughout there
are checklists like this. Can you see that? Don’t know if you can see it, yeah, checklists. And so, there’s one that I’ve put there about insurance. Business structures, already said. we’ve got a very simple little table so that you can look for yourself and see ahh, which way do I need to be going. So, this is really a
business owner’s DIY guide to something, some legal aspects that they might need to know
about in their business. And what it really is, why we wrote this book, is it’s the very most common problems that our clients have come to us with over our combined 40 years of experience of being small business lawyers.
